making a stock gift

gifts of stocks, bonds and mutual funds

Making a gift of stocks, bonds or mutual funds to MSU Hillel is easy and has special tax benefits.

When contributing appreciated securities held for more than one year:

  • Hillel receives a gift equal to the market value of the securities.

  • You can take a charitable tax deduction equal to the market value of the securities.

  • You avoid paying any capital gains tax.

  • You remove the value of the securities from your taxable estate.

IMPORTANT:

All electronic transfers are made safely and securely through our partner agency, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit (JFMD) and then forwarded to MSU Hillel.

To make a stock or mutual fund donation:

  • Please inform your broker that you would like to make a gift to MSU Hillel.

  • Either you or your broker should then contact Jonathon at 517-332-1916 to let us know of your forthcoming transfer.

  • Either you or your broker should complete these Stock Transfer Instructions to finalize your transfer.

  • Note: If needed, MSU Hillel’s Tax ID Number is: 38-3034766

**Reminder: We ask that you or your broker notify us in advance of your transfer so we can be sure that JFMD applies your gift to MSU Hillel. We will need the stock name and number of shares. This information ensures acceptance of delivery and proper acknowledgement for tax purposes.**
